Plug into the Digital Socket Awards

Ireland has never had a huge amount of diversity when it comes to music awards – that’s not meant as any disrespect to the existing awards, but there is definitely room for another one. After all, variety is the spice of life! So I’m delighted to announce that there is a new music awards on the block – the Digital Socket Awards. Full disclosure – I’m a judge for the awards, along with 20+ other bloggers. The difference between this and other awards in Ireland is that the public get their say on who should be nominated. So how can … Continue reading Plug into the Digital Socket Awards

Unreal. Egyptian Lover plays Ireland in February

This is probably the best news of the year for me – Egyptian Lover (Greg Broussard) will play the Grand Social in Dublin in February. I think the last time he played Ireland was at the Mantua Festival a few years back but I’ve never seen him live so I am ultra excited. Egyptian Lover was one of the pioneers of West Coast rap and was a big player in the LA scene in the 1980s.  He’s a hugely talented DJ – I wish I had his skills! Also, I’ll be honest, I love the fascination with Egypt (he has … Continue reading Unreal. Egyptian Lover plays Ireland in February

Word of Mouth Tour: The Ambience Affair, We Cut Corners, Windings

Last January’s Word of Mouth Presents tour – which brought O Emperor, Sons of Noel & Adrian, and Alessi’s Ark to venues around the country – was so successful that they’re going to do it all again. So next month for The Certain Three 2011 Tour another three great  bands will play around Ireland: The Ambience Affair,We Cut Corners and Windings. This is a very strong line up with something for the rockers, the instrumental-heads and the power-poppers. I really love these gigs that put all the bands up as headliners rather than ‘band + support’ – it’s an economical … Continue reading Word of Mouth Tour: The Ambience Affair, We Cut Corners, Windings

Christmas Choons

Ah, Christmas. It’s no exaggeration to say that it’s my favourite time of year – and I especially love that it’s the one time that I can play cheesy songs without feeling guilty. When it comes to Christmas songs, there are very little I don’t love – hell, I even love Slade’s Christmas song – and I have a special place in my heart for any band that attempts a Christmas song. Plus, ‘Christmas song’ usually makes people think of handclaps and sleigh bells and harmonies, and you can’t go wrong with that. For some wonderful reason, a few Irish … Continue reading Christmas Choons

Black Sun – Cork’s ‘weirdo’ music event is back

This Monday sees another of the weird and wonderful Black Sun gigs taking place in Cork city. Conceived by Vicky Langan and Paul Hegarty, Black Sun is a night quite like none other – a gathering of unusual, weirdo and avant-garde musicians who will perform in the historic Pavilion venue. This month, the gig will take place on 6 December to deliver the grand finale to the city’s ArtTrail festival, and will star snuff-jazz legends Borbetomagus and more. Says Vicky: “Black Sun is a space where the adventurous can gather, whatever their musical preference, to find something new, strange and … Continue reading Black Sun – Cork’s ‘weirdo’ music event is back

This bad weather is leading to a rake of gigs being cancelled – sad news for promoters! But a lot of them will be rescheduled so don’t lose faith.
